So, the world post-bowerbird. All in all, the event was very successful and not as terrifying as i imagined. However, I erroneously supposed that things would slow down a little after bowerbird. It seems this was not to be.
I’ve been busy mostly with photography and filming work, which of course is GREAT fun. I’m currently working on Julia Henning’s music video and also my neo-victorian pin-up calendar. I have finished one shoot, just eleven more to go now! Here’s a bit of a teaser:

I’m also preparing for a textile exhibition at Red Poles called “Unravelled” which opens on the 29th of May. I’m planning to make some Kanzashi style hair ornaments out of hand dyed felt.

As for filming, I have been continuing work on the Willunga Waldorf School project. Everything is very autumny now, which is wonderful, and results in some great colours.

I also did some filming for a rather impromptu gig that some friends organised on thursday night. It was such an amazing event, great bands, great venue (a small upstairs shop which is usually inhabited by an awesome art and design collective.) We all had to take our shoes off at the door, and everything was so comfortable and intimate. I got some really great footage which I will hopefully be able to edit into a short clip soon. Here’s a few still shots I liked.

Well, I shan’t say “hopefully things will slow down soon” because I just don’t think it’ll be true at all.

sticky-taped to the grass on my back, feet dangling down into space
I’ve been brought back down to earth this week as I begin to realise just how much work I have to do in the next few months. While it is all really fun stuff, I must admit I’m looking forward with some trepidation.
Bowerbird Bazaar is the big one, sitting there at the tail end of March, telling me I’m not shiny/polished/insured enough. I attended an info night last Monday, which was exciting and very useful, but somewhat intimidating. It’s not only the event itself, but all the opportunities it might open up, I guess I’m getting a touch of stage-fright.
However, some less scary things coming up in March include:
My 21st Birthday! (and resulting nocturnal-picnic/dance/art-party)
4 day Womadelaide!!
Trip to Melbourne to see Imogen Heap!

class 2 students playing at lunchtime
Other than fretting over the fast approaching future, I’ve been keeping myself busy with graphic design work for the Green Room on High Street (official website coming soon), as well as preparing for the Willunga Artisan’s Market, which happens once a month.
My biggest ongoing project is the film I am making about the Willunga Waldorf School this year. I have done four days of filming so far, and I’m going again tomorrow, and then at least once a week for the rest of the year.
I’m absolutely loving this project, the people are so photogenic, it’s crazy. and the grounds and buildings are so beautifully designed. In particular, the lower level classrooms are an architectural fairy-tale.
One of the things I keep noticing is the colours. Last week I walked into the class five room (which looks relatively modest on the outside.) and was struck by the play of the serene blue light filtering through the curtains, and the warm glow of the lamp which illuminated the blackboard.
Due to a lack of standard uniform, the students and staff themselves provide a beautiful palette of ever-changing colours.

outdoor ed?
Last week I also did some filming in the school gardens, which are very large, and include shade-houses, fruit trees, vegetable patches, a chicken coop, a seedling nursery, and a wood fire oven.
In the afternoon, the class 9 students were heating and bending glass to make airlocks which they then attached to large glass bottles. This week they will begin crushing grapes
to make their own wine which they will put into the airtight bottles to ferment. I’m hoping to film the crushing process this Wednesday.

I’ve also been learning more about my camera and have been taking photos of anyone who will stand still long enough! I’ve got a few small portrait jobs lined up in the next few weeks, but I’m still looking for more!

So, I’ve been having trouble eating anything for the past few days, due to extreme levels of excitement. You have to understand that for me, this is rather unusual, as I love my food, and generally eat about twice as much as most people I know. Hence, I’m talking crazy excited. Pre-christmas-for-five-year-olds level of excitement, or the kind you feel at 2:55 pm the day before the holidays start.
The cause of this agitation, is the very recent purchase of my shiny new camera. It’s a Canon EOS 500D, and I am head over heels in love with it. I have spent the last year or so trying to get by with a cheap little point-and-shoot which had some pretty nasty smudges on the lens. It was getting to the point where I was taking pictures with the camera upside-down in order to minimise the appearance of smudges. But I’ve been saving like a squirrel on speed, and I am now the proud new owner of a camera which is not shit.
In other news I got into the Bowerbird Bazaar for March 26th – 28th, which I’m still pleasantly surprised about! However, I wasn’t quick enough for any fringe exhibitions (kicking myself a little for that.)
I’m not used to having so much planned out so early in the year, but this year looks set to be pretty full on. I’ve got two, possibly three film projects lined up, as well as at least two photography projects.
It is possible that only a dog who has just discovered that the bone he planted yesterday has grown into a tree of turducken-flavoured cakes, can understand how excited I am.

p.s. in reference to the title, it is a question which was posed by Charles Lutwidge Dodgeson, better known as Lewis Carroll. Consider the paradox that a man who travels westward around the earth at the same speed as the sun will find that though he started on a Tuesday, when he returns to his starting point the day is now called Wednesday. Where and when did the date change?
